Fall

Central Park 1970 (Tamara Beck, photographer)

As the weather turns from sultry to sublime,/

The leaves blush with the pleasure of the/

new season and in anticipation of a/

frosty sleep to come. In the Fall,/

time is their friend and ours.

At Play

The waters ripple in the evening
Tide, the moon, their soul mate,
Hidden in a darkened sky is not
Playful, even as the river scampers
Across from shore to shore, released
From its daytime duties, away from
The sun, cloaked in darkness
Does it search for the moon’s light?
Or, is it content, running rapidly
On its own, hosting brightly-lit
Boats that appear like beacons
From time to time, lighting up
The dark riverscape, even if the
Moon will not peek out to help
Clarify and inform the water’s path

Cloudy and grey

Lying low, so close overhead

It feels–or maybe only you do–

Like you can touch the sky

Billowy, little cotton pillows in

White/grey/gray-blue/ with touches

Of black or brighter, cleaner, more

Clorox and transparent white,

Pillowing above the treelines,

Over the buildings, so close

You can touch the sky

In the wake of

EastRiverWalk
Quiet waters, billowing clouds © 2014 Tamara Beck

The wake, like a trail on a wedding

Gown, at first, like that dress, white

With the churning waters, then green

With a carpet fringe of the river rapids,

Demarking the passing of the ship,

A boat, a yacht, really, full-steam quick

And powerful, the green carpet left

Behind its pull, no less than a magic

Genie’s ride, dipping, swaying, and

Swelling, the swells mysterious and

Memorable, the memory of the yacht

That sailed by on this crisp clean day

Sings on the river, a wake now gone

My establishing shot

Tamara_Beck_1
Lost in thought?

This would be my establishing shot

The one that sets the place and the

Character, facing Roosevelt Island,

Connecting to Queens, the lights on

The bridge twinkling in twilight,

Shadows, the river deep, dark and

Mysterious, waters moving slowly

With undercurrents, the river establishes

Without irony, without self-parody, as

Serious as the approaching night, shadows,

Not hiding, but revealing who we are, who

I am, my establishing shot

Refreshing

Adults have been given permission to enjoy pop for many more years than you imagine. In the soda market space, there’s the old standby, Orangina, a product I have always found equal to my maturity. Its proximate competitor is the very amusing San Pelligrino Aranciata, available in small bottles or cans.

While in many ways the ultimate in adult beverages for my money is seltzer water, whether it be Perrier, Pelligrino, Polar, Saratoga Sparkling or Poland Springs, the flavored arena is a fulsome one. It also makes for a nice change.

GuS (aka Grown-up Soda) is pretty much a new kid on the block. A family owned business, these soft drinks have wide distribution in bodegas and fancy food stores.

Recently, I was introduced to another drink of “Sipperior” quality at the York Social, where Sipp is in the fridge. Like GuS, Sipp prides itself on its natural and organic flavors and recipes. The variety made with pear is an especially lovely blend, but the Berry Mojo drink is also lovely.

Tributaries

It seems simple (or simplistic) to assume that mimicking another’s easily recognizable quirks is of course a mockery. It is likely, or at least possible, that the parody is a tribute.

High Anxiety, homage or spoof? The send-ups of PsychoThe BirdsVertigo, are all over the top, of course. Mel Brooks is clearly piling on the Alfred Hitchcock tropes and making fun of them, but so lovingly that it could easily be read as an ironic tribute.

I said Camus, but perhaps Woody Allen was aiming for Hitchcock, too. His Irrational Man is among the best of his recent works; it’s dark and introspective. Infidelity, mortality, uncertainty in relationships,  is usual fare for Allen it is always intensely personal. Here, as in Manhattan Murder Mystery he looks at characters who commit murder with indifference.

Hitchcock always served murder with a slice of irony. Nonchalance was the modus operandi of his villainous heroes.

The Ladykillers, famously with Sir Alec Guinness and directed in 1955 by Alexander Mackendrick, finds new life with a hilariously bumbling Tom Hanks under the direction of Coen Brothers. Like the Hitchcock homages mentioned, this film is completely sui generis. It’s originality is fueled by outstanding performances by Irma P. Hall, Hanks, and an ensemble of fools bent on a sketchy get-rich scheme.
