The album

BB+TBWe will never be this young again

We always knew that, but didn’t

Believe it, until one day, looking

At pictures of how we were, when

We were that young, smiling photos,

The happiness blended with youth,

We had to confess that time had

Passed, happily and with the stealth

Of time slipping by, unnoticed and

Quieter than the images of those young

Happy people looking back at us

It seems simple (or simplistic) to assume that mimicking another’s easily recognizable quirks is of course a mockery. It is likely, or at least possible, that the parody is a tribute.

High Anxiety, homage or spoof? The send-ups of PsychoThe BirdsVertigo, are all over the top, of course. Mel Brooks is clearly piling on the Alfred Hitchcock tropes and making fun of them, but so lovingly that it could easily be read as an ironic tribute.

I said Camus, but perhaps Woody Allen was aiming for Hitchcock, too. His Irrational Man is among the best of his recent works; it’s dark and introspective. Infidelity, mortality, uncertainty in relationships,  is usual fare for Allen it is always intensely personal. Here, as in Manhattan Murder Mystery he looks at characters who commit murder with indifference.

Hitchcock always served murder with a slice of irony. Nonchalance was the modus operandi of his villainous heroes.

The Ladykillers, famously with Sir Alec Guinness and directed in 1955 by Alexander Mackendrick, finds new life with a hilariously bumbling Tom Hanks under the direction of Coen Brothers. Like the Hitchcock homages mentioned, this film is completely sui generis. It’s originality is fueled by outstanding performances by Irma P. Hall, Hanks, and an ensemble of fools bent on a sketchy get-rich scheme.

1drawingI wish I could draw,

I would tell you so much more

Of the sky, the clouds, that low-

Flying bi-plane overhead,

I would paint you a vision of

The ephemera of a cloud with a hole

Showing blue and closing slowly

Disappearing into itself, breaking

Apart and floating like an island

But soft and pillow-like. I would tell

You of the silica glistening off

A concrete wall, its solid shape

Holding off the sky, blue and bursting

With puffs of white, soft and pillow-

Like, over our heads, seagulls

And helicopters circling above.

The changing skyscape sketched

In quick broad strokes. Picture

This portrait of air and light

Rainy days

Inside, the sound of the rain rushing under the swoosh of cars is soothing. Running water always is. Still, it is not fun to sit soggy in transit to a favorite pasttime.

It’s hazy but clear. Photo © Tamara Beck

My husband’s advice to the weather has always seemed so sensible: rain or snow, if you must, overnight. He’s right, we need more sunny days.

Just once I’d like to hear that the rain was called because of a game!

Daily Prompt: Obsessed

An obsession is what occupies the mind so completely as to allow no room for anything else. Eating and sleeping are fit into the busy obsessive’s schedule by default, of course, but primarily s/he focuses on the subject at hand. Or the object in mind.

Most of us have favorite themes in our life, things–sometimes theories– which keep us up late, and early. Everyone obsesses over something, but no one does it better than those suffering unrequited love. The one you love is perfect, and the center of your world. If only s/he would realize that you, too, are perfect and make you the center of his/her universe as well. Oh, well….

If you have no Rosebud, or Rosaline (or Juliet) over which to obsess, you need to find another hobbyhorse.

Orson Welles made a childhood memory into a lifelong obsession in Citizen Kane. Interestingly, this movie segues into my current obsession of defeating one of the presidential hopefuls   (Thank you Mother Jones for this telling episode of the Trump Files.)

There also some of us who are obsessed with ourselves.  This statement is not a non-sequitur, but definitely applies to my current obsession.

People with a lot of time on their hands sometimes like to get into the conspiracy game. Unlike obsessions in love, these are more like my current political fears, but maxed out. Did Oswald act alone? is an unhappy example.

Keeping things in perspective is key. Try not to let your obsessions keep you up at night, or haunt your dreams.

Desert — The Daily Post

via Desert — The Daily Post

Okay, you did say desert and not dessert. Sorry, I misread. I am always quoting the old adage, life’s too short, eat dessert first. Does not fit here.

Deserts– like a few desserts– tend to be surprisingly reddish in hue. And can be very very lovely and calming places to visit.

I recommend them as part of a meditation ritual. Peaceful, soulful, gentle spaces that are often hotter than you’re comfortable with, but will take your breath away in the spiritual sense as well.

Hey, it’s hot

Author’s note: As a teen, I found heat intoxicating, titillating, and a fine metaphor. Today, I continue to explore its effects.

Languid in the melting heat, I sit under the sun’s intense gaze

Wondering if the tension so palpable in the air will uncoil.

As the bright sun blazing paints the sky around me with haze

My ease is complicated as the temperature threatens to roil.

My leisure is lazy, relaxed, yet uncertain, delicate, dimmed

By the  light so fiercely and passionately around me rimmed

Cool spots are hot spots

When the temperature rises

A breeze hits the spot

While the sun blazes

Winds off the river

Fan the air and take

The edge off the heat

Breezing by they deliver

Just enough to slake

The passions that fill the air

Nowhere to go, just sit, bask in the sun’s glory,

So bright, so hot, enjoy its sizzling beauty,

The temperature rises until the air swathes

Engulfing, encompassing, holding tight

Heat defines you on these days

The blue skies creased in haze

It’s tropical and we don’t live in the tropics

Humid by any definition, heat is a hot topic

Nowhere to go, just bask

No rush, just relax

Heat on your skin is languourous,

Even sexy. As the weather turns so

Hot, you don’t want to move, or if

You must, move ever so slowly

Each step an intent. Your intension

To be still and let the air soak you,

It’s tensions coiled like the sweltering

Sun, every movement defining muscles,

Each breath shallow, your body unfurling

Like the flag on the 4th of July, measures

The rising temperature, and relaxes into

The bright hot air. There is no rush, no

Hurry. Take in each breath, but do not

Gulp the air, you should not swallow the heat

Let your body enjoy the engulfing heat, your

Skin damp with effortless sweat

Made in the shade

Grilling, baking, broiling,

That’s good for meat,

You need to be chillin’
